My Story of Food Addiction, Binge Eating, Depression, and Healing

A no-holds-barred conversation

I consider myself a food addict.

By saying that, I don’t mean to compare it to alcoholism or other drug addictions and imply that my suffering is the same. What I mean is that I suffered from urges and behaviors that I felt were out of my control, and I spent months in the closet, binge-eating and hiding the evidence.

It was compulsive and self-destructive behavior that had a drastic effect on my physical health and my mental health. And I couldn’t stop, I couldn’t tell anyone. The shame was a huge burden.

I felt unlovable, worthless, and stupid.

When I was at my lowest point, I was so depressed that I wanted to kill myself.

Many addictions have similar origin stories. When we addicts share our past, childhood abuse, neglect, and trauma often come up.

This video is about that story and how I got better. But it’s also about our relationship with food, alcohol, porn, cigarettes, vaping, and any other addictive behavior that we might get tangled up in.

Here is what Mac from Porn Free Millenial had to say about our conversation:

Addiction doesn’t always look the way we expect. Whether it’s food, porn, alcohol, or endless scrolling, many compulsive behaviors share the similar underlying patterns and the similar hope for healing.

In this episode, I’m joined by Tim Ebl 🇨🇦, a recovered food addict, ex-binge eater, and certified Primal Health Coach. Tim’s been to the bottom and back and now helps others find a clear, compassionate, no-BS path toward a radically healthy and happy life through his Substack publication, Time2Thrive.

→ How habits form
→ Why we get stuck
→ What it really takes to break free

We also dive into the cultural relationship we have with food → how social norms, marketing, and even childhood experiences can shape unconscious behaviors. Developing cultural and self-awareness is often the first breakthrough moment in any healing journey.

And yes, we get into it → seed oils, high fructose corn syrup, and diet pop (or soda... depending on your zip code…we’re not here to judge, but we might poke a little fun 😄).

You’ll see just how much overlap there is between food addiction and porn addiction as well as other addictions → and why the strategies for building self awareness and embracing healing habits are more connected than you might think.

Whether you’re struggling with your relationship to food, sex, or screens → or just ready to make a shift toward a lifestyle that thrives → this one’s for you.

Watch the video and let us know if any of it speaks to challenges you have in your own life.
