This is the first in a series of Food Label Show and Tells with
and myself. In this Live Video, we discussed seven different foods with misleading labels.
If you think food companies aren’t dishonest, aren’t out to trick you, and aren’t intentionally misleading you, then you need to watch this video! It’s up to us as consumers to be informed. No one is going to protect you. It’s your job to ensure you and your family know what you’re eating.
These corporations are required by law to have an ingredient list. But no one is holding them accountable for deliberately making it confusing, and outright pulling the wool over the consumer’s eyes.
Most people look at labels but only check the calorie count, the amount of proteins/ carbs/ fat, and whether or not there are any allergens to watch out for. This information is most likely correct.
But let’s get into the tricks we talked about in this video:
Mayonnaise “Made With Olive Oil” is actually 73% canola oil and ONLY 5% olive oil (Just over a tablespoon.) That’s right, this mayonnaise is margarine made from seed oil with a tiny bit of egg (a couple of tablespoons per container.)
Foods labeled “organic” so you’ll think they are good for you, but they have as much sugar as a candy bar and very little nutrition. This includes protein bars with more sugar than protein that will spike your insulin through the roof.
Examples of “cottage cheese” and “sour cream” that don’t contain whole milk or cream and are mostly made from reconstituted dry products, a whole list of gums and additives. These could more realistically be called leftover milk product paste.
Organic instant oatmeal that is stuffed full of sugars and chemicals that set your body up for failure. Seeing organic on the label doesn’t mean it’s good for you!
Margarine that has been labeled “Plant Butter” and has flowery, enticing language like “Better Butter For Butter Lovers” and “Rich and Creamy Buttery Bliss” to make everyone think it’s the best product out there. But it’s still margarine. Don’t think margarine is a problem? Read my article Vegetable Oil Was Designed by Doctor Evil.
So What Can We Do About It?
Read those labels, people! Start with one or two items in your pantry and ask yourself, should I put this in my body?
When you go shopping, turn the product around and read the back. Vote with your dollars. Be fussy.
What would you do if you went out for dinner and caught the restaurant trying to trick you into eating leftovers? Would you just eat it and say thanks, then pay them full price?
I bet you wouldn’t.
We shouldn’t cut these corporations a break, either, especially when they are trying to trick us. We can catch them red-handed and stop paying them good money for garbage foods.
