I have heard that too much cardio is not great for you but I had no idea why! Thanks so much for sharing that information as you definitely want to focus on burning fat..
It's definitely something to think about if that's your goal. I think the bigger problem is levels of stress hormones and the slow increase of tissue damage over time, though. Even if you can lose weight at first in the black hole, it might not keep working for you if you throw your body into a state of permanent stress where it never gets to recover.
Great article. I had my own personal intuition about this. It never felt right. Now I injure myself easily as I have hypermobility. My exercises are very specific from a PT.
It’s just like that saying about whatever doesn’t kill you making you stronger. Didn’t Norm McDonald say that whatever doesn’t kill you, only leaves very close to death?
I went through cardio workouts time and again on and off for years and finally admittedI just don't like these type of workouts. Now I could see better why this is. 😊
Instead, I do more gentle stretching and yoga and focus on my core. I appreciate that some cardio is good for you, but it's probably my least favorite activity out of all the exercises.
Thanks Tim for shining a light on this. For some reason this reminded me of the one and only time I took a Bikram yoga class (aka hot yoga), and I left the class feeling completed depleted, red faced with my heart pounding in my chest. It took over two hours for me to cool down. I knew something was wrong, and that it was not at all good for my body. And yet, there are so many people that love it and swear by it. I typically listen to my body, and what it tells me is that walking in nature, Qigong and moderate workouts at the YMCA are best.
Wow that sounds like you were definitely pushed too far! It’s okay to work a little outside your comfort zone but you shouldn’t be feeling it hours later.
Everyone is at a different fitness level, so what is just a casual workout for one person is way too much for another. I’ve gone to hot yoga a few times and I liked it. But I never make myself “keep up” with yoga if it’s beyond my current level, so towards the end of the class I’m modifying the movements to fit me.
This was so interesting for me to read, mainly because I'm still 20 lbs up from my knee injury last summer. HIIT always sounded cool to me but I'll be the first to admit I hate exertion lol. The one exercise (besides yoga) that I grew to love before my injury was rowing. I found it very zen but also intense enough to feel good. Now that my knee has almost full range again, it's time to get back to rowing I think. Opinions?
Rowing, cycling, slow jogging, walking, hiking, and rucking are all good ways to get exercise while not making your heart rate get too high. I’m going to post next week about heart rate for your most effective cardio workout, but a good starting point is your ability to carry on a conversation. If you can’t EASILY talk to someone, you’re usually in the black hole.

Haha. I don’t know who said that but it’s an obvious truth.

It’s so easy to work just a little harder than is good for you with cardio. When I started running it was what I did every time I went out the door.
