Really like the style in which this was written. Too many people say the exact things you quoted, and the parallel examples made me laugh, particularly the remote control one haha. Everything that our brains send us in the way of emotions, feelings, and thoughts is just information. It can't make us do anything. It can't control us. So, if someone wants to work out and eat healthy, aim yourself that way, strap in, and let all the contradicting noise from your brain bounce off you into the dust. And if you need help blocking that noise, take Tim's advice here and pay for accountability. Great message.
Thanks, Alex! You're right, all of our thoughts and emotions are only information. We don't need to act on them, and most of the time, we don't act on every silly thought or emotion that comes through our heads. If we did, we'd be in jail. Or worse! So we obviously have the ability to choose our actions.
Great tips! The problem with motivation these days is that we are so attached to our phones. We may start by using an app to help with motivation and then get side tracked but something else on our phones. Like right now, I need to go to the gym, but saw this article I hadnβt read yet. ππ. So here I am!!
Yes, those pesky phones are a distraction. But the important thing is that you DID read this article, even if you gave up all your hopes, dreams, and ambitions!
Having a system where I make decisions up front reduces the possibility of my making the stupid decision in the moment. For me, less thinking at the point of action means I will act.
Yes to your accountability point (well yes to this whole damn post). Don't get a plan with your bestie to whom you can easily bail and they will say it's ok, get your plan with someone you don't know as well so you'll be more likely to follow through. Otherwise pay for a coach or a trainer, often they are much more affordable than you think.
That's a great point about the bestie. Sometimes they only agree to do the thing because it sounds fun, and when it stops being fun, they're outa there. That's especially true if they only grudgingly agreed.
You don't have to convince a good coach or trainer to show up. They want you to succeed so they can use you for a testimonial! They've got skin in the game and feel bad if you don't do well.
This is a lot of fun! Some great messages in here. I actually just wrote about motivation in my most recent post! I think people most often confuse motivation with consistency. I liken it to if motivation is the prom queen, then consistency is the nerdy girl in glasses who's going to be a millionaire someday. We can always be consistent, even if we're not feeling particularly motivated. ;)
That's a great analogy. I just realized that "motivated" seems like something outside of our core is acting on us, whereas consistency is something that we do internally. The cheerleader is looking for extroverted, external rewards, where the nerdy girl is doing her own introverted stuff.
This is great advice!! Accountability works like a charm even for those of us who think weβre good on self motivation.
I use it. I use every method I can find! That's how we can get the most out of life.
Thank you for the comment.

Haha yea good chance we'd be in jail. Except for those people that say they "never have a negative thought", right....

I'm the same way! I won't follow through on what I know I should unless I plan it out and take away the chance to make a dumb choice instead.
