Mantras. They sound like a mysterious secret trick used by monks deep within their mountain retreats. Partially true.
Mantras have been used by different traditions throughout the world, from shamans to Christianity to Buddhism. Some of the earliest mantras were recorded in Vedic Sanskrit in India.
In those times, not everyone had access to meditation tools on their iPhones. Now, the secrets are easier to unlock. You don’t have to join a monastery and study under harsh conditions for years to learn to use mantras.
Why I Meditate
I’ve seen firsthand how a simple meditation can save your life. Years ago, I went through a period where work stress and depression almost derailed my career. My marriage was on the rocks. My relationship with my teenage son consisted of yelling and physical confrontations.
My whole existence was grey, pointless, and painful. I was desperate and looking for anything to get out of this hole.
That was when I learned a mantra meditation while reading “Success Through Stillness” by Russell Simmons and Chris Morrow. I decided to give it a solid try. There was nothing to lose.
I had meditated before, but never consistently. The mantra did the trick.
After a few weeks, I started to climb out of my pit of despair. I saw the sun rising over my world, and I owe it to the mantra I learned to use.
It wasn’t an instant fix. There was no blinding light and moment of truth. I walked out of the shadows one step at a time.
One day, I realized that I was feeling peaceful instead of anxious. Relationships were working for me, at home and at work. I didn’t feel doomed. I felt peaceful.
“To know yourself as the Being underneath the thinker, the stillness underneath the mental noise, the love, and joy underneath the pain, is freedom, salvation, enlightenment.” — Eckhart Tolle
I became a meditation instructor to share the tools that got me back on track. Meditation helped me save my career, gave me the strength to face my weaknesses, and saved my marriage. It also gave me compassion for myself and my son.
I have a better life because of a simple mantra. I didn’t need to lock myself away from the world for ten days of silence or take weeks of training to learn it. But I did need to use some persistence.
I learned to sit still and exist without (as much) judgment. You can do the same.
