Education is foundational for everyone in the household, when someone you love struggles with disordered eating. Learning about language triggers was a key component in my house, how we talk about what how much or how little we ate, commenting or complimenting someone for how much or how little they ate.

Self-deprecating comments were met with, β€œPlease don’t talk about someone I love like that”, and that also was self reflecting.

Congratulations on kicking this door open!

Thanks For your insight, Sherry. You’re right, it’s super important to be aware of how we affect others (and ourselves!) with the way we talk about and act toward food. Like that old rule of finishing all your food, and being grateful to get anything at all, is lodged in my head from when I was a kid.

Getting your story out there will help others. Especially the men and others who think this is just a female issue.
