That is a wild story about James, no wonder your spidey senses were giving you a warning!
Thanks for this info about spicy food, I knew it was healthy but hadn't seen the research. I am a medium spice girl at best so will work on slowly increasing it.
I used to work in a wing restaurant and, while we didn't have industrial strength, we could make them very spicy. It was interesting being a server on wing night🤣
Yeah, ‘ole James turned out to be a winner. I saw him beat a cow up once too, because it pooped on the fence. It was pretty unnerving. After that we just all kinda backed away and avoided him.
Your story reminds me of traveling to India with friends to record a conference there in the early 1980s. My friends decided to order their food spicy. I knew something was amiss when a group of waiters surrounded our table and watched them eat the food with shocked looks on their faces as they whispered and laughed with each other. The next day my friends couldn't leave their hotel room because they needed to be near a bathroom! They forgot one of the most important tricks of eating spicy Indian food: eating a side dish of raita (a yogurt dish) to cool the digestive system. Lesson learned.
I have in recent years re-discovered my love for spicy food. Added bonus if hot peppers are good for your health!
One thing though: if I forget I'm not wearing my contact lenses, cut hot peppers for some recipe, then later attempt to put my contact lenses in my eyes, this ends up not being a joyful experience. 😵💫😀
I’ve never looked into the difference between hot peppers and horseradish. I love torturing myself with wasabi too, and it seems to have less effect on the stomach
Tim, this post was so good 😂 First of all, I think I saw James' story on a Canadian crime documentary. I can’t remember his name but the story is very familiar.
Second, I sprinkle red chili flakes on pretty much everything. Now I feel so much better about it! These statistics are kind of fascinating. I wonder if it's why Cancer rates are so much lower among Caribbean people. They eat jerk-seasons food a lot (spicy AF!)

I do not tolerate hot peppers very well, but I love horseradish and wasabi. I wonder what the difference is?

Wow! I didn’t know that yogurt would help, good to find out about.
I’m not too familiar with Indian food, but if it can be that spicy I should give it a try.

Hot peppers and eyeballs definitely don’t mix! I’ve made that mistake so so many times
You have definitely heard of “James.” He’s featured in a couple crime podcasts etc. It’s super weird knowing that guy.
I love those chili flakes. Pizza isn’t even edible without them!
